There’s a kaleidoscopic feel to the pianist-composer's new Ways and Means material. As the vivid prog-jazz escapades spill forth, an array of micro-ensembles emerge. The trombone kisses you on the neck, the Rhodes and reeds form a blustery coalition, the tempos ride up and down an escalator. It makes for an edge-of-your-seat ride, even when full-blown exclamation is nowhere in sight. This is the start of a three-gig romp that climaxes at the Jazz Gallery on September 10.
